Marge Elderberry

‘Marge’ is a hybrid between the American Sambucus canadensis and the European Sambucus nigra. The berries are larger than the American varieties and ‘Marge’ is also self-pollinating so only one plant is necessary for fruit production. Flowers form on last year’s woody growth, so fruit will form the second year after planting. The berries contain antioxidants and flavinoids considered to be antiviral with immune-building benefits. Elderberry syrup is sold to treat colds, coughs and other upper respiratory ailments. Elderberries can be made into jam, jelly, wine, juice, syrup or pies.

Berries must be cooked before consuming.
